Cataract Creek Campground Alberta Recreational
Area.
The
Cataract Creek campground is located
on gravel road 54A in the Highwood
area
13km
South of the Kananaskis Trail
highway and is
8km
South of the
Etherington
Creek Campground,
Livingstone
Falls Campground is
29km
South of here.
This campground offers 102 campsites
for both tents and larger RV's, dry
toilets, water pumps, garbage bins,
picnic tables and fire pits. Dry
firewood is available here for sale
in small bundles. The campground
is located in a healthy Lodge Pole
Pine forest. You can see a long way
through this forest as the initial
7meters
of a Lodge Pole Pine is a bare pole
with the branches starting higher up
on the tree. You can can easily walk
for miles on a beautiful cushioned,
pine needle covered ground without
having to bushwack. You will not
forget the experience of hiking
through a Lodge Pole Pine forest,
this is one of the finest. There's
a small hill located in the center
of the campground with a deck and
bench located at the top. Views of
the Rocky Mountains to the West and
the surrounding forest are very nice
from the deck. If you have children
I'm sure they will enjoy playing in
this area. Cataract Creek runs
crystal clear and is home to wild
Cutthroat
Trout. You'll need a
fishing
license to try your luck,
see regulations for catch and
release. You can hike along the
creek for
kilometers in both directions. Night skies here are ink black
(#2 on the
Bortle Scale)
but the area is not very good for for
astronomers due to the dusty
13km
gravel road access. Mount Burke is
located to the East, it's summit
would make an excellent day hike. If
you're pulling a trailer or driving
a large RV, be careful
in the campground. There are a few
tight turns and the tress show the
evidence of trailer scrapes.
This is
Bear country,
food and food related items must be
stored properly.
