Elk Island National Park, Alberta.
The
Astotin Lake Sandy Beach campground is located
in
Elk Island National Park on
the east shore of Astotin Lake approximately
50km
east of the City of
Edmonton.
There are 77 sites with reservations
available by calling 1-877-737-3783.
This campground offers campsites for
both tents and larger RV's, group
camping, sandy beach, picnic
shelters, free showers, water, fire
wood, picnic tables, sani dump,
swimming area and play ground.
A golf course is also located
nearby.
Canoeing or kayaking on Astotin Lake
or anywhere in the park is
excellent, motor boats are not
allowed. This campground
is good for families with young
children. Kids will enjoy the beach and nearby playgrounds.
There is a well maintained 'Walk In Tent Sites'
section that include fire pits and picnic
tables. Due to this campgrounds
close proximity to
Edmonton
it fills fast on weekends.
Elk Island National Park is also
designated as a dark sky preserve
but light from the city of
Edmonton
ranks it at # 4-5 on
the
Bortle Scale
which is poor
for star gazing. Elk Island National Park
is a conservation area for pure bred
bison (Buffalo). They run wild in
the park and can often be seen along
the roadway and designated observing
areas. Elk, Deer and Moose are also
here in large numbers. The park has
several hiking trails that wind
through the
Aspen Parkland
and
Boreal Forest
along with endless Marshes that are
home to over 250 bird species. This
park is a bird watchers paradise.
You will need a
National Park
pass to enter the park. This is
bear country,
food and food related items must be
stored properly.
