Strawberry Equestrian Campground Recreational
Area.
The
Strawberry Equestrian campground is
located in the Highwood area off
highway #40,
55km
West of the Town of Longview. This campground
is only open in the Fall, after the
September long weekend. The
campground is situated along the
Highwood river and offers 18 campsites for
both tents and larger RV's. You'll
find dry
toilets, hand operated water pump, garbage bins,
picnic tables and fire pits. Dry
firewood is available here for sale
in small bundles. The campground is
mainly suited for equestrian
activities and about half of the
campsites include hitching posts for
horses. The Highwood river runs
crystal clear and is home to wild
Cutthroat
Trout. You'll need a
fishing
license to try your luck,
check your fishing regulations for
catch and release. Deer, Elk and
Bighorn Sheep
are all around this area. Night skies here are ink black
(#2 on the
Bortle Scale).
There is a gas station located
5km
East of here at the Kananaskis Trail turn
off that has a small store,
gas, diesel, limited grocery, sani dump and water.
Strawberry campground is open late
into the fall season and is mainly
used by hunters at that time of
year. There are several hikes in the
area that include Cataract Falls,
Mist Creek, Picklejar Lakes, Cat
Creek interpretive trail and
Ptarmigan Cirque. Nearby campgrounds
include
Etherington
and
Cataract Creek.
If you follow the #40 Highway North
you will drive over Highwood Pass
which is the highest paved highway
in Canada. Elevation of the road at
the pass is
2206M
-
7239Feet.
Highway #40 is closed to motorized
traffic from December 1st to June
15th for local wildlife
preservation. During this closure
time the highway is excellent for
early spring cycling.
