Strawberry Equestrian Campground Recreational Area.

The Strawberry Equestrian campground is located in the Highwood area off highway #40, 55km West of the Town of Longview. This campground is only open in the Fall, after the September long weekend. The campground is situated along the Highwood river and offers 18 campsites for both tents and larger RV's. You'll find dry toilets, hand operated water pump, garbage bins, picnic tables and fire pits. Dry firewood is available here for sale in small bundles. The campground is mainly suited for equestrian activities and about half of the campsites include hitching posts for horses. The Highwood river runs crystal clear and is home to wild Cutthroat Trout. You'll need a fishing license to try your luck, check your fishing regulations for catch and release. Deer, Elk and Bighorn Sheep are all around this area. Night skies here are ink black (#2 on the Bortle Scale). There is a gas station located 5km East of here at the Kananaskis Trail turn off  that has a small store, gas, diesel, limited grocery, sani dump and water. Strawberry campground is open late into the fall season and is mainly used by hunters at that time of year. There are several hikes in the area that include Cataract Falls, Mist Creek, Picklejar Lakes, Cat Creek interpretive trail and Ptarmigan Cirque. Nearby campgrounds include Etherington and Cataract Creek. If you follow the #40 Highway North you will drive over Highwood Pass which is the highest paved highway in Canada. Elevation of the road at the pass is 2206M - 7239Feet. Highway #40 is closed to motorized traffic from December 1st to June 15th for local wildlife preservation. During this closure time the highway is excellent for early spring cycling.
