Two
O'clock Creek Campground
Kootenay Plains Recreation Area.
Two
O'clock Creek
Campground is located
on the Kootenay Plains next to the
David Thompson
Highway (#11)
210km
West of
Rocky Mountain
House.
A 4.5 hour
drive
from
Edmonton,
3.5 hours from
Calgary.
If you're traveling from
Calgary
the route through the National Parks
is shorter then heading through
Rocky Mountain
House.
Two
O'clock Creek
Campground has 20 campsites with picnic
tables and fire pits. Most of the
campsites are open to a grassy area
on the Kootenay Plains but few are
nicely surrounded by Aspen and
Spruce tress that provide some
privacy. Several of the campsites
are located next to
Two
O'clock Creek. This campground offers
water,
dry toilets, refuse containers and
firewood.
The community cook shelters have
been removed and placed in the group
campground. The group
campground is huge and one of the
nicest I've seen.
There are several hiking trails in
the area. To mention a few,
Alexander
Henry's Trail,
Siffleur
Falls Hike,
Crescent Falls
Hike,
Hoodoo Creek
Hike,
Kinglet Lake Hike,
Loudon Creek
Hike,
Two
O'clock Ridge Hike,
Icefalls Loop,
Vision Quest
Hike, Windy
Point Ridge, Allstones Creek Hike,
Allstones Lake
Hike, Coral Creek Hike, Coral
Ridge Hike,
Big Whirlpool
& Whirlpool Ridge,
Glacier Lake
Hike, Cline and
Coral Canyons are all
located
near here.
The North Saskatchewan river is
located a short walk South of the
highway. This area is very important
to the local Stoney Indians. Native
peoples along with Stoney Indians
have resided here for centuries and
consider most of this land sacred. I
can see why they settled here. The
weather in this area seems warmer
and clearer and the yearly
rain fall and snow fall is very
light. In fact it is classified as
the driest location in the Canadian
Rockies. When hiking off the beaten
paths you may see a native
Vision Quest
site. These sites have
several strips of cloth tied to trees
in a ceremonial fashion.
Vision Quest
sites certainly have my respect. If I unintentionally
hike into one I leave only the air I breath. I also cannot help think
that our youth could learn from the
Stoney Indians and this tradition. Night skies here
rank # 1 on the
Bortle Scale
and the road
leading to the campground is paved.
Bring a good insect repellent, No
See Ums can be nasty in this area.
Thompson Creek
Campground is located
approximately
15km West
of here.
This is
Bear country,
food and food related items must be
stored properly.
See the official web site
link below for fees, opening and closing
dates.
