Canyon Creek Campground Peter Lougheed Provincial Park Kananaskis Country.
Canyon Creek campground is located
in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park
Kananaskis country approximately
145km south west of
the city of Calgary. There are
52 campsites both
open sites on well kept grass
and treed sites that offer more
privacy in the
surrounding
forest.
The campground offers campsites for both
tents and larger RV's, picnic
tables, fire pits, dry toilets,
water, sani dump, paved bike paths
and interpretive hiking trails. Dry firewood is
available here for a fee. Canyon
Creek Campground fills fast on weekends
due to it's close proximity to the
City of Calgary. There
are several trails located in the
area including the scenic Canyon
Creek interpretive trail. This short
trail runs up and down along Canyon
Creek with several wooden bridges,
steel gangways and lookouts. There
is also an extensive
paved bike path system that can be
accessed from here. You can ride
a bike around this entire area.
There is a lot to explore here, the
Upper and
Lower Kananaskis lakes are
located nearby. Both lakes have very
nice picnic areas with picnic tables
located close to the lakes edge. The
Upper
Kananaskis Lake has a well groomed hiking
trail around the entire lake that
offers beautiful views of Mount
Lyautey, Mount Sarrail, Mount Foch
and Mount Fox. Trailheads to
Rawson
Lake,
Hidden Lake,
Fossil Falls, Astor Lake and
Three Isle Lake are located at the
Upper Lake. Both the
Upper and
Lower
Kananaskis Lakes have excellent boat
launches for both power boats and
small water craft such as canoes.
Canoeing the
Upper
Kananaskis Lake on a calm
summers evening would be an
unforgettable experience. There are
Rainbow Trout,
Cutthroat
Trout and Bull Trout in
both the lakes. You'll need a
fishing
license to try out your
luck.
William Watson Lodge is
located within walking distance of
the Canyon Creek campground. The
lodge was created to provide equal
access to this beautiful area for
people of all abilities and provides
1st class
accommodations for
seniors and those with disabilities.
I tip my hat to Jean Lougheed who
thought of creating this Lodge and
her husband
Peter Lougheed
who made it happen.
