Wyndam Caresland Alberta Recreational
Area.
The
Wyndam Caresland
campground is located 35 minutes
East of the City of Calgary on the
bank of the Bow River. There are
over 100 private deciduous treed Campsites
available on a first come first
serve basis only, the campground
fills fast on weekends due to it's
close proximity to the
City of Calgary.
This campground offers campsites for
both tents and larger RV's, toilets,
playgrounds, garbage bins, fire
pits, picnic tables, excellent
fishing, water and Sani Dump. In
2005 a record flood took out the
walk in tent sites. Dry firewood can
be purchased at the Store parking
lot found at the entrance to the
campground. The local store also
offers limited groceries, a coffee bar,
ice and ice cream. A golf course and
the town of
Caresland are a few minutes away.
Caresland
has gas, diesel, grocery, pizza
takeout, hotel and bar. Wyndam
Caresland Campground should be
designated as a Bird Sanctuary. It's
an excellent spot for Bird Watchers.
In the Spring and Summer I'm sure
you can find every Bird species
native to Alberta here. Some campers even
hang bird feeders with pointing tripod
mounted cameras.
Owls can be
heard whooing at night and during
the day
Pelicans
and
Double Crested Cormorants can be seen fishing
near the weir. Night skies are
relatively dark here (4.5
on the Sky Clock Bortle Scale)
and there are a few open grassy
areas that are good for setting up a
telescope. This stretch of the
Bow River in either direction, up or
down stream, is excellent for Fly
Fishing from early spring to late
fall. A
fishing
license is needed,
check the regulations as a small
section of the River is closed in
the spring. There is a short walk
from the campground along the river,
heading up stream towards the
irrigation Weir. The "Extreme
Danger" sign below, is true, people
have drowned trying to float over
it. There is a similar Weir in
Calgary that has taken several
lives and is being redesigned.
