Athabasca Falls Jasper National
Park.
Athabasca Falls is located
on the Athabasca River in Jasper National Park
approximately
30km
south of the
Jasper
townsite.
The waterfall is
23m
high and
18m
wide. Park at the Athabasca Falls
parking lot on Highway 93A. This
popular tourist attraction is very
crowded during the summer months. To
avoid the crowds I would suggest
arriving at the parking lot early
morning or early evening. There are
several safe lookouts located near
and across the other side of the
falls. Do not leave the designated
paths or climb over the rails.
Several individuals have
underestimated how slippery the edge
rock is and fallen to their
deaths here. The paved trail leads
across a wide bridge to numerous
lookouts on the south side of the
falls. It also
leads down several steps towards
the bottom of the falls where you
can see earlier erosion of past
waterfalls and the Athabasca River.
Miette Hot
Springs and trailheads to
Maligne Canyon,
Opal Hills,
Bald Hills,
Mount Edith
Cavell,
Sulphur
Skyline,
Horse Shoe
Lake,
and
Whistlers
Mountain
are also located in this area.
You are in
bear country.
