Lower Kananaskis Lake. Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Kananaskis Country.
Lower Kananaskis Lake is located
approximately
156km,
1.5 hour drive south west of Calgary in
Peter Lougheed Provincial Park
Kananaskis Country. This lake is man
made and used for hydro electric
power and irrigation. The lake can
be almost empty in Early June before
the run off starts. Several trails, bike paths
and picnic sites can be found along
the lakeshore. There is a lot
to explore here, the nearby
Upper Lake has
a well groomed hiking or mountain bike trail around the
entire lake that offers beautiful
views of Mount Lyautey, Mount
Sarrail, Mount Foch and Mount Fox.
trailheads to
Rawson Lake,
Hidden Lake,
Fossil Falls, Astor Lake and Three Isle Lake
are located at the
Upper Lake. Both
the
Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes
have excellent boat launches for
both power boats and small water
craft such as canoes. Canoeing the
Upper or Lower lakes on a calm
summers evening would be an
unforgettable experience. There are
Rainbow Trout,
Cutthroat
Trout and Bull Trout in
both the lakes. You'll need a
fishing
license to try out your
luck.
William Watson Lodge is
located a few
kms
east of here. The lodge was created
to provide equal access to this
beautiful area for people of all
abilities and provides
1st class
accommodations for
seniors and those with disabilities.
I tip my hat to Jean Lougheed who
thought of creating this Lodge and
her husband
Peter Lougheed
who made it happen.
Boulton Creek
campground,
Canyon Creek
campground,
Lower Lake
Campground,
Elkwood campground and
Mount Sarrail
campground are all
located near here.
You are in
bear country.
