The
Miette Hot Springs is located in
the Rocky Mountains in the Fiddle
Valley
15km
east of the
Pocahontas
Campground,
61km
north
east of the
Jasper
townsite and
51km
west of Hinton. This is the hottest
natural hot
spring (54
Degrees C)
in the Canadian Rockies. There is a
resort, restaurant and a large pool
where the water is cooled to a
comfortable temperature. They say
the natural minerals in the water
can be very therapeutic. There are
also several hiking trails and
Bighorn Sheep are everywhere. The
short walk up to the old hotel ruins
is well worth the effort. You'll
smell sulphur in the air and see several
small hot springs flowing
out of the ground and rock face. These
hot springs are beautifully stained with sulphur, minerals and algae's. It's
surprising how hot (54
Degrees C) the water from
these springs are. This must be a
magical place in the winter time
when steam is venting through the
snow from all the
springs.
There is a short
2.5km hike past the ruins
to Utopia pass that is somewhat
disappointing, not sure why it was
named Utopia? However it is a good
spot to escape the crowds and eat a
packed lunch. The Miette Hot
Springs has a nice picnic area
located next to the parking
lot and the ruins trailhead. On your
way towards Miette Hot Springs you
can stop at
Punch Bowl
Falls which is
18km
west of here just before the
Pocahontas
Campground. trailhead to
Sulphur
Skyline is also located
here and can be found behind the hot
springs pool.
Opal Hills,
Bald Hills,
Mount Edith
Cavell,
Whistlers
Mountain,
Maligne Canyon,
Horse Shoe
Lake
and
Athabasca Falls are also located in
the Jasper area.
You are in
bear country.
