Rawson Lake Hike. Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Kananaskis Country.
Rawson Lake is located
approximately
160km South West of
the city of Calgary in
Peter Lougheed Provincial Park
Kananaskis Country. This hike is
considered moderate with an elevation
gain under
300 Meters.
Approximate distance to the lake is 3.9km allow 3 hours for a return trip. The
trail head is located at the
Upper
Kananaskis Lake parking
lot near the South Shore of
Upper
Kananaskis Lake. Follow
the trail West along the shore of
Upper
Kananaskis Lake. Shortly
after you pass over a small bridge
next to a waterfall you'll see a
posted sign and a well marked trail
heading up to your left. Follow this
trail all the way up to Rawson Lake.
Rawson Lake is a classic example of
a mountain
Tarn Lake.
It is a stunning emerald green color
and crystal clear. Rawson Lake has
also been stocked with
Cutthroat
Trout. Fishing may or not
be allowed. Check the local fishing
regulations for open/closed dates
and catch & release only. Mount
Sarrail towers straight up near the
back end of Rawson Lake. The
surrounding meadows are bright green
and absolutely beautiful. Be aware
that these meadows are prime
Grizzly Bear
habitat. There is a small man made
dam located at the outflow of the
lake to prevent the
Cutthroat
Trout from escaping. Ice
off is Late June to early July.
Rawson Lake can be very crowded in
the summer months. An early morning
start is recommended to escape the
crowds. Trail heads to
Hidden Lake, Astor Lake and
Three Isle Lake are all located in
this area. Nearby campgrounds are
Boulton Creek
campground,
Lower Lake
Campground,
Canyon Creek
campground,
Elkwood campground and
Mount Sarrail
campground.
