Description

Trailhead: Wilcox Pass is located near the Columbia Icefields. 100kms south of Jasper and approximately 111kms north of Lake Louise. The east end trailhead is located at the entrance to the Wilcox Creek Campground. The west end trailhead can be found 14kms west at Tangle Falls on the Jasper highway. Jasper National Park.

Description: Wilcox Pass may be one of the finest hikes found in Jasper National Park. The trail starts just below the alpine zone where you’ll find beautiful meadows, big horn sheep and outstanding views of the Columbia Icefields. You won’t find better views of the surrounding glaciated peaks, Mount Athabasca, Mount Andromeda, Snow Dome and Mount Kitchener.

Glaciated peaks will stay in view as you hike along the full 6km ridge towards the summit of Wilcox pass. There are several creeks cascading through the surrounding meadows along with an abundance of wildflowers. Big horn sheep are accustomed to people and are often grazing very close to the trail, especially during early morning and dusk.

Continue on until you reach the signed summit where the meadows are a full 1km wide. From the sign you can continue on straight ahead towards tangled falls or take a trail to your left that leads to the ridge overlooking the Icefields Centre and Mount Wilcox.

You can also access Wilcox pass from the climbers tents only campground by hiking straight up the right side of Wilcox Creek. This is the quickest and easiest route to open views on the pass. If you’re staying at the Wilcox creek campground you can hike an unmarked trail that is located at the top loop near the water pump shack. Wilcox Pass is a great one way shuttle hike. Park a second vehicle at tangled falls 14kms west of here and hike the entire pass ending at Wilcox creek campground. You’ll enjoy the solitude on the Tangled Falls half of the hike. Allow 4-6 hours to do the entire pass one way. You are in bear country

This hike has the most beautiful views! Great for all abilities as there are lots of spots to stop for a break. Keep your eyes open for wildlife as we often see sheep grazing on the hillsides. A keen eye can also see Mountaineers making their summit on Mount Athabasca (pack your binoculars!)
