Location/Description

Location: Beaver Dam campground Provincial Recreation Area is located 40km west of Rocky Mountain House on highway #11 along side Shunda Creek. Approximately 3 hours from Calgary, 3.5 hours from Edmonton.

Description: This campground is more suited for tenting. There are 8 nicely treed walk-in tent sites along with 3 RV sites that are located next to the highway. Beaver Dam campground has dry toilets, refuse containers, firewood, community camp kitchen, small dock and boat launch. There is no water supply here other than the lake and creek.

The lake has been created by a man made dam on Shunda Creek. The dam is located at the east end of the lake. In early spring I did see a few small rainbow trout cruising around the shore near the lakes east end dam.

Good fishing can also be found downstream amongst all the local Beaver dams, you’ll need a fishing license to try out your luck. On a hot day day the lake is good for swimming or canoeing. I was told that mushroom picking is good here however I saw very few the 1st week of June. If you need a break from driving, this campground is a nice place to picnic. There are a few picnic tables located next to the lake. Night skies here rate #2 on the Bortle ScaleYou are in bear country.
