Location/Description

Location: 61kms south on the #60 Kananaskis Trail highway, 150kms west of Calgary. Peter Lougheed Provincial Park Kananaskis Country Alberta.

Description: Elkwood campground contains 130 well treed campsites for both RV’s and tents. Peter Lougheed Provincial Park is as nice as the National Parks and does not require a park pass however during the summer months it fills fast and can be crowded.

Amenities include amphitheater, pay telephone, showers, picnic tables, fire pits, flush toilets, water and interpretive hiking trails. Dry firewood is available here for a fee. There are several hiking trails located near here along with a paved bike path system that connects all the campgrounds. You can also ride your bike to nearby Upper and Lower Kananaskis lakes.

Both lakes have very nice picnic areas with picnic tables located close to the lakes edge. Upper Kananaskis Lake has a well groomed hiking trail around the entire lake that offers beautiful views of Mount Lyautey, Mount Sarrail, Mount Foch and Mount Fox. Trailheads to Rawson Lake, Elbow Lake, Elbow Lake to Elbow Loop, Hidden Lake, Kananaskis Fire Lookout, Fossil Falls, Astor Lake and Three Isle Lake are located in this area. Both the Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes have excellent boat launches for both power boats and small water craft. Canoeing the Upper Kananaskis Lake on a calm summers evening would be an unforgettable experience.

Night skies here rank #3 on the Bortle ScaleThis is bear country, food and food related items must be stored properly.
