Description

Trailhead: Park at the Upper Kananaskis Lake parking lot located in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. 170kms west of Calgary.

Description: This is an unofficial unmarked trail located approximately half way around the Upper Kananaskis Lake scenic trail. You can start at either of two east or west parking lots found on the Upper Kananaskis Lake. Continue on the the Upper Kananaskis Lake trail aiming for the southwest point of the lake.

Look for a simple walking sign that has Hidden Lake etched on it by other hikers. There is no official sign pointing the way. Continue on a south off shoot trail a short distance to Hidden Lake. Hidden Lake is somewhat disappointing. It’s an intermittent lake and a dull grey color. The entire lake seems void of any wildlife and certainly not inviting.

The barren shore line indicates the lake fluctuates in height and looks man made although it isn’t. I’ve been told that Hidden Lake recedes in late fall turning into a muddy flat. It supposedly has a hole located in the middle of the lake bottom where Fossil Creek drains underground into Upper Kananaskis Lake. If you work your way towards the southeast corner of Hidden Lake you will find the trailhead leading towards Fossil Falls.

The small set of falls across the lake are very nice and interesting how the lake drains underground.
