Location/Description

Location: Park at the west Upper Kananaskis Lake parking lot. 66kms south on the #60 Kananaskis Trail highway, 155kms west of Calgary. Hike in 3kms. Peter Lougheed Provincial Park Kananaskis Country.

 

Description: Point Backcountry campground contains 20 hike-in tent sites only with no road access. The easy hike to the campground is approximately 3kms, 1.25 hour hike along the west shore of the Upper Kananaskis Lake. Views along the trail are beautiful especially the rock slide off Mount Indefatigable.

The trail does continues past the campground around Upper Kananaskis Lake with forks to south Kananaskis Pass, Aster Lake and Fossil Falls. Point Campground can also be accessed by boat. Amenities include firewood, hopefully an axe, fire pits, picnic tables, gravel tent pads, food storage lockers, food storage poles and dry toilets.

Backcountry camping permits can be purchased in person at the Peter Lougheed Park, Barrier Lake and Elbow Valley visitor center’s. Upper Kananaskis Lake and the Kananaskis River are a short walk away. Peter Lougheed Provincial Park is as nice as the National Parks and does not require a park pass. Upper Kananaskis Lake holds Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat Trout and Bull Trout. You’ll need a fishing license to try out your luck.
