Location/Description

Location: #40 highway 8kms north of Grande Cache and 172kms northwest of Hinton. Foothills of the Rocky Mountains Alberta.

Description: Sheep Creek campground only contains 6 campsites for both RV’s and tents. This campground may be best for stop overs. Amenities include picnic tables, hand water pump, fire wood may be available for sale and dry toilets.

The Smoky River flows along side the campground and offers good fishing for Rainbow Trout, Bull Trout and Rocky Mountain Whitefish. You’ll need a fishing license to try your luck. White water rafting trips are often taken on this stretch of the Smoky River. This area is also good for ATV’s and snowmobiles.

When driving north of Grande Cache you’ll notice a large coal mining operation on the west side of the #40 highway. The local geology and exposed coal seems is not something you see often. It’s interesting to note that power lines located near the entrance to Sulphur Creek campground were relocated as they were originally placed over the top of a native child’s gravesite. See plaque picture below for details.

Night skies here rank # 4-5 on the Bortle Scale. See the official web site link below for fees, opening and closing dates. This is bear country, food and food related items must be stored properly

More of a stop over than campground.
