Description

Trailhead: Located at the Red Rock Canyon parking lot Waterton National Park.

Description: Cross the lower bridge and follow an old logging road called Snow Shoe Trail. Snow Shoe Trail heads into the Blackiston Valley and offers some of the best mountain biking in Waterton National Park. Expect to share the first 4.5km with mountain bikes and horse outfitters heading towards South Kootenay Pass.

At approximately 4.5km you’ll see a signed trail on your right heading north towards Goat Lake. The remaining 2.5km of the trail quickly turns into a steep climb with a few switch backs that offer beautiful views of Goat Falls and the Blackiston Valley below. Beware of falling rocks from the cliffs above as you traverse the upper section of the trail.

Once you arrive at the top of the falls the trail enters an old growth spruce and fir forest. Crystal clear Goat Creek runs alongside the trail for a short distance until you reach the lake. Follow the trail past the Goat Lake backcountry campground towards the north shore of the lake where you’ll find a log bench. This is an excellent spot to have your lunch and look for goats that may be on the surrounding cliffs. Goat Lake offers good Cutthroat Trout fishing. You’ll need a fishing license to try your luck, check regulations for closures. Ice is usually off the first week of July. You Are In Bear Country

Beautiful Lake. Carry lots of water if it’s a hot day. The south scree slope is long and hot.
